THE CHRISTIAN STUDY CENTER MOVEMENT
On the national scale, Christian study centers first emerged in the 1970s and 80s, led by the flagship Center for Christian Study at the University of Virginia. A Christian Study Center is a community of students and scholars animated by the ancient ideal of integrating faith, learning, and living. Such centers have emerged at many leading universities in the U.S. and Canada in recent decades. The Oxford House Christian Study Center seeks to expand this movement to the Rice University community.
We are Christian in the broad, historically orthodox sense—described by C.S. Lewis as “mere Christianity”—based in the Bible and summarized in the Apostles’ Creed. We do not advance any particular political or cultural agenda; rather, we seek to exercise a thoughtful, renewing Christian presence in U.S. public higher education.
OUR PROGRESS
In the Spring of 2025, a handful of leaders in the Houston community worked to launch an independent Christian study center in close proximity to Rice University. As of March 31, 2025, the Rice Christian Study Center is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and applying to become a partnering member of the Consortium of Christian Study Centers.
In the Fall of 2025, the 2026 Advisory Committee was formed to shape the vision, strategy, and programs of the Study Center during this formative first year of programming. Additionally, the Rice Study Center was also formally recognized as an official Partner member of the Consortium of Christian Study Centers.
For the Spring 2026, we will host the Rev. Dr. Ben Witherington, III for our first campus-wide lecture on April 15th-16th.
